Dealing with Exam Anxiety During Mock Tests

You could spend months studying the syllabus, but if you panic when the timer starts, you risk underperforming on the day it matters most. Exam anxiety is a real obstacle that affects thousands of Wireless PSI aspirants.

Fortunately, managing stress is a skill that can be practiced and mastered during your weekly mock tests. Here are three methods to build a calm and bulletproof exam mindset.

1. Simulate Real Exam Parameters

Anxiety is often triggered by unfamiliar environments. If you take mock tests casually on your bed while listening to music or checking your phone, your brain is not prepared for the quiet, high-stakes atmosphere of the exam hall.

Set up a clean table, turn off all notifications, set your timer, and sit in a quiet room. The more your body experiences this setting, the less threatening it will feel on the actual day.

2. Implement the "Three-Pass" Strategy

Getting stuck on a single difficult question in the first 10 minutes can trigger a cascade of panic. Instead, use a structured question skipping strategy:

  • Pass 1: Go through the paper and solve only the questions you are 100% sure about. Skip anything that requires complex calculations.
  • Pass 2: Solve the questions that require a bit of thought or short calculation.
  • Pass 3: Review the remaining hard questions in the final 20 minutes.
Why it works

By securing easy marks in the first pass, you build positive momentum. This dramatically lowers your cortisol levels and boosts your analytical thinking for the harder questions.

3. Focus on Controlled Breathing

If you feel your heart rate spike during a mock test, stop for exactly 30 seconds. Close your eyes and take three slow, deep breaths. This simple physical action interrupts the fight-or-flight response, instantly clearing your mind for logical reasoning.
